How to make an essay on a controversial topic: choose the theme
When you are asked how to do an essay on a controversial topic the first thing you will have to do is choose the topic. If the essay is going to be a basis for a debate you may find yourself in the situation of having to defend an idea you do not share and argue as if it were your own.
This is a great exercise that can be practiced by writing essays on philosophical, political or religious issues from two opposing points of view. For example, you can write an essay on abortion speaking in favor and another speaking against. What is achieved in this way? Freedom to defend arguments, ability to put yourself in the shoes of someone who does not think like you and perhaps understanding very opposing points of view, which although not shared can be debated from the respect.
Respect: the first key to how to make an essay on a controversial subject. And we must take it into account from the first step, when we choose the theme, define it and titrate it. It should never be an offensive or overly aggressive title. Defending and arguing our point of view does not mean trampling on the opposite.
The test can be oriented so that we defend a theory or hypothesis, but also dismantling a previously formulated one. For example, the teacher can give us the hypothesis: Abortion is equivalent to murder. You, on the basis of this theory, can argue in your favor to reaffirm it or against it to refute it.
If you are allowed to choose the topic you should always bow to those you believe will be of greater interest to the people you will be targeting. For example, if it is to read in class choose a topic of interest for your circle of peers. But above all, you must like it, since it is never written better than when it is done on something that motivates.
